TODAY...

Today.

Today the snow is finally gone.

Today My throat no longer feels like it’s shredding itself every time I swallow.

Today my cough is better. I woke up having slept all night. Dan too!

Today I have no fever, no chills, no aches, no pains.

Today the sun in shining in my corner of the world.

Today the light is different. It’s warm, it’s alive.

Today the air kisses my skin with the promise of spring, of summer. Of new life.

Today.

Today, in Haiti, people are still dying.

Today, in Haiti, there’s no food, no water.

Today in Haiti, there’s no medicine, no tools.

Today in Haiti, there’s no help. No hope.

This is where we come in. The first wave of support comes easy, when the horror of the photos is fresh and the hope for survivors lingers. Now, when we’ve moved on to the next tragedy, to the Olympic games, to the next thing, It’s harder to go back, to feel the same urgency. But the need is still there.

Dan does a lot of volunteer work with Doctors Without Borders and they’re telling him that they’ve never seen anything as bad as this. They need everything.

Jeanne, at Cooksister is sponsoring a raffle to benefit Haiti. I’ve donated two boxes of the best gifts of my host country , chocolate by two famous chocolatiers, Jean-Philippe Darcis and Pierre Marcolini. You can bid on them, and I’ll ship them to you wherever you are.

I’m in veryvery good company. David Lebovitz, among others, has donated prizes to this raffle. So head over to Cooksister and see what you might want to buy a ticket for.

Go ahead, do it.

Today.

Hi Kate, I hope you are doing well. Sounds like you are. And, yes, help is still needed so badly (I've noticed Dr. Sanjay Gupta from CNN has not really left Haiti since he arrived-some say he feels he shouldn't leave). I'll try to think of something good to donate/sell. Thanks Kate.

It's always a great day when you're feeling better!
I'm involved with something locally for Haiti, so must pass on this. But your post was a lovely segue into a plea for the Hope for Haiti cause. A very good cause, may I add.

Thanks again for your offer of translating the Verrine book!

Yes, this is a great post! I hope the raffle makes lots of money to send to the cause. At work we are also taking donations for Doctors w/out Borders. Such a great cause.

I was wondering who was donating these beautiful Belgium chocolates - and was hoping it wasn't from a US Store. I have had them from both - and there is no comparison. I actually phoned the Marcolini store back, in NYC and expressed my sincer disappointment - very politely - expecting nd asking for nothing in return. Just thought they should really know that their chocolates were almost stale... and they refunded my money. But, with chocolate like that - you want it from the source, and to eat it ALL within 2 weeks. How hard is that?
I love to travel, and am actually very near retirement and we have discussed moving to live in europe. I could take the risk - as long as I could still make some money there - and that would not be an easy process - I gather. But, like you - I cook, and am so into art - drawing for now. Used to paint at University a thousand lifetimes ago - and want to get back at it. Love your self portrait. You should have a page with your art. I would love to see it. I am just in the process of getting mine up... well, maybe will finish getting it all done in the summer. Life moves too fast. HO2pe for Haiti, cooking, art - a lot in common. Love your site!
